When you’re working on the technical aspects of SEO, you’ll need to know how to use several different tools to check the various elements. In this lesson, we’re going to walk through the best technical tools at your disposal.

First and foremost, you’ll want to learn how to use the “inspect element’ feature in Chrome. Just right-click on any page element and select “inspect element” – a window will appear at the bottom of the browser that lets you inspect the source code of the site. You can sort through CSS and other code to see what’s going on element by element.

You’ll definitely want to install the MozBar plugin as well. The mozbar automatically displays Domain and Page Authority, and gives you quick access to several awesome analysis tools. Even cooler, when you’re on a Google SERP, it adds Page and Domain authority AND link and linking domain counts.

More than anything else, you’ll want to get familiar with Screaming Frog. It runs locally on your computer, and it’s an incredibly powerful tool that crawls a site and reports back tons of information. You can pull info on all of the important SEO elements on a page, you can pull status codes, you can check out internal links, page size, and tons more. This is one of the most important tools in your SEO utility belt, so download it now and get familiar. Seer interactive has an amazing guide to doing almost anything with Screaming Frog over on their blog: .

Webpagetest.org is a great tool for checking site load speed.

URI Valet isn’t the prettiest interface, but it combines several technical tools that can be a huge help when doing technical audits.

The Wayback Machine at archive.org can be a helpful tool when you’re trying to see what’s going on with the history of a site.

SEMrush also has an amazing robust tool for site audits! You can check over 60 on-page technical elements including site speed. Over 20 elements related to crawl-ability, https issues and hreflang issues. Check the further reading tab on this lesson for more info on how to use the SEMrush Site Audit tool ().
